Our Work Based Learning Program

Work based learning is an educational strategy that helps to bridge the gap between school and work by
providing students with practical training and real-world work experiences. Our work-based learning
program is in place at a low income high school in Ojo, Lagos, where we work with about 100 students in
a cohort. Over 200 students have benefitted from this program and we are expanding to a new school in
the coming weeks. Our work-based learning program encompasses several components designed to help
students identify and build successful careers.

Program components include

1. Training: This includes weekly career development classes focused on: helping students become
more self-aware, and learn about their interest, personality, values, etc.; introducing them to
various career opportunities; and helping them to develop basic soft skills. Our training also
includes intermittent workshops for technical skills like graphics designing, coding, social media
management etc. to prepare specific students for entry level internship roles, and other
prospective job opportunities.

2. Field trips: Beyond classroom experiences, we take our students on field trips to tertiary
institutions, conferences and workplaces to expose them to school/work reality and inspire them
to pursue greater heights.

3. Practical work experience: We help students to explore potential careers and build hands-on
work experience which is done either during school session or during the holidays. During school
sessions, our practical experiences include student community development projects and
student entrepreneurship projects where students are able to bring their ideas to life, develop
tangible products/service and create value while developing relevant skills. During holidays, our
practical experience includes job shadowing and internship opportunities, as well as the student
leader project where we hire students to facilitate classes in summer camps.

4. Events: We hold events at every end of term for our students to showcase all they have been
learning. We also hold career fairs from time to time. At the end of the school session, we organize
our Annual Speech Competition for graduating students, where they speak on pressing societal
issues, showcase their research and public speaking skills, and win exciting prizes.
